IN CHARACTER
Name: Peter Maximoff
Canon: X-Men movies
Canon Point: After seeing Charles and co. off to Paris
Age: 17-ish (no age is given in the movie, but he's clearly old enough to be trusted to drive and young enough to still be in his mother's care.)

History:   Wiki Link  / Canon Point is after dropping the gang off at the airport

Personality:

For someone like Peter, time seems to be at a constant crawl. Nothing about the natural world can keep up with him, either in mind or body. Living like that for nearly two decades has taken its toll. Peter is constantly bored and looking for the next thing to thrill him. He seems to treat life like a game as a way to keep interested in the daily grind. Because he's always looking for the next new thing, over the course of his teenage years he's picked up some bad habits.

One of his worst traits is his need to steal. Charles describes him as a kleptomaniac and that's pretty much on the mark. Stealing seems to have started out as a way for Peter to get his adrenaline pumping but evolved into a near compulsive habit. We see in his room the fruit of his thievery; small things like candy up to larger things like TV sets. He's started out picking up little things to keep him amused and it's clearly grown into a larger problem. He takes things just to see if he can get away with it and once he knows he can, he goes for bigger and bigger targets. One of his latest requirements is a Pong arcade game which in the timeline would have only been around for a handful of months at the time of the movie's start.

From how his mother reacts upon hearing strangers want to see her son, it's clear Peter has troubling behavior problems. She assumes the men are around because Peter has taken something from them and assumes that they're cops. She doesn't act surprised and even says its not the first time cops have had to see Peter.  There is the implication that she has little control over him and that he's turned into a wild child with no regard for the law. In fact, Peter himself confirms he's a rebellious trouble maker. His answer to someone thinking he's up to something is to tell them it's nothing they can prove.

His powers have let him get away with almost everything since their onset. He's too quick for a camera to catch, far too fast for the naked eye. The older he's gotten the more he believes he's above the law, because no one can physically keep up with him for punishment.  Anything else he's shown to simply lie about.  If no one can prove anything, then he sees no point in telling the truth. Peter gets a sick enjoyment out of tricking people and knowing that he's holding that truth over their heads.

As stated, Peter has a certain disrespect for authority. Cops are something to laugh off, the thought that the FBI might be talking to him is treated more as a passing interest than something to be afraid of. He clearly doesn't listen to his mother when it comes to breaking the law. He's dismissive and outright rude to Charles and Logan when they come to him, reacting with sass and making fun of their age. In his era, most authority figures are going to be older men. Peter has grown up without a father and some of that resentment towards his disappeared dad has leaked into a resentment of all disciplinary types.

This isn't to say that he isn't capable of trusting authority figures or that he hates all adult men. While it takes a while and some flattery, Peter warms up to Charles and his gang. He seems a little confused but pleased with how they treat him, giving little praise when he helps them out and Charles trying to impart humorous life advice. While Peter is the type to say he doesn't need a father and he'll be just fine without one, he has a craving deep down for that kind of relationship in his life.

Peter is a teen who loves the idea of a challenge. He's lights up at the idea of breaking into a secure facility like the Pentagon and rigs his arcade games to an incredible speed. Seeing life pass by at such a slow rate makes it difficult for him to find much of anything truly stimulating, so the idea of doing something hard or dangerous comes across as thrilling. He also prides himself on being able to say he has done it. He clearly likes to push his boundaries and accomplish things for the thrill of it or just to say he can. He wants to see just what he can be pushed to do. For example, he starts off as nervous when he goes to break the glass of Erik's prison but afterwards looks on in surprised wonderment. It's clear he's busting with self pride in that moment for doing something new and seemingly impossible.

In a lot of ways, Peter comes across as a bit manic and excitable. He's prone to asking the same question over and over again rapidly, bouncing around and acting more like a child on a sugar high than someone who's almost an adult. Part of this is simply his personality. He's still young and childish, getting excited about things typical to a young person. A bigger part of this is because of his powers. He might be asking the same question on rapid repeat because in his view of time, the other person is taking a long while to answer. If he's already excited or emotional he can forget the obvious time discrepancy between him and others, and continue to prod. This makes him look like he's more impatient and excitable than he is.

Which isn't to say that Peter is capable of being annoying just for the sake of it. Peter is very immature for his age and enjoys getting a rise out of others. He's quick to make childish or sarcastic remarks just to see what kind of response he'll get and see just how far he'll push someone before they snap back. Acting like a brat is one of his ways of amusing himself to alleviate some of his boredom.

Like many teenage boys, Peter wants to be above it all and be a cooler person than he actually is. He tries to affect a detached, smug persona at all times. Peter wants to pretend to be this witty, impossibly cool guy that other's (namely other people his own age) would find entertaining. He's clearly impressed and shocked when first seeing Logan's power, but covers it up with a smarmy remark. We see glimpses beyond that smugness several times; he's taken back by Erik's admittance of trying to kill the president, he's nervous about going undercover, and he's upset when he sees Erik's broadcast on TV. He wants to come off as more mature and interesting than he is, which has the opposite effect of making him seem even more immature and annoying. He lacks the self awareness that the smug act makes him look worse instead of better.

Peter wants to know everything about other people's business: why did you do that, where are you going, etc. Most of his dialogue is asking questions about other characters motivations, pasts and plans. Part of this seems to be a desire to be annoying, such as when he pesters Erik, and some of it is simply because he has such an issue with boredom that he looks for even the most mundane ways to fill his time. His power lets him think far faster than the average human being and having that much extra time to think makes him more curious.

This curiosity makes him a very fast learner. He wants to understand something, he can and in a very short time span. Peter has nothing but time to kill and we see in the film how he's used his time to learn. He's learned to rig his arcade game to work at multiple times its original speed. This game has only been out a few months at most at the time we meet Peter so he's learned how to work with the machinery and code very quickly in a time when one couldn't just search it on a computer. He's also rigged his cassette players to not only work at an incredibly high speed but work so that the speed doesn't damage the tapes. Again, this is something that would take an average person a long time to figure out but the prototypes he's shown using were not available for long before the movie's timeline.

Despite being a quick learner, Peter isn't inherently smart. He can pick up on things faster than normal but that doesn't help him when it comes to basic understanding. He clearly takes some time to grasp that Erik might be his father, even after admitting that his mother was close to a man who had Erik's power.  To brighter people, the conversation would have been a big reveal, making it obvious that Erik was a likely candidate for Peter's disappeared dad. However, Peter just shrugs off the conversation and never seems to think it's important enough to talk about again.

Peter might be an annoying kid but he appreciates when people play along and even when they snark back at his expense. Erik sniping back at Peter's stupid question with James Brown lyrics clearly delights him. This ties into Peter loving a good challenge, if someone will verbally spar with him he's going to be happy. He likes getting people on his level and likes when someone takes the time to humor him. A sense of humor is an easy way into Peter's good graces, no matter how stupid the joke.

Peter is mischievous, he's a thief, and he's a brat but he doesn't want to get people hurt. He has a line and he doesn't cross it.  While he doesn't seem to understand, or care, how his thieving can have an effect on people he never stoops to causing any real harm to others. A little beating up if its a real fight is okay, but his aim is more to incapacitate rather than cause lasting damage. There's no indication than any of his previous crimes have resulted in any real injuries and he certainly isn't after fatalities. He has no loyalty to the X-men crew but still intervenes when they are shot at to not only move away any bullets that could cause a fatality but to stop any injuries to them all together.  Nothing that he does to the guards is meant to truly harm them either, and he steps into the fight before Erik can hurt them.

He also actively doesn't try to hurt anyone he actually likes.  He seems completely willing to actually take Charles's car back instead of stealing it when presented with a golden opportunity. Peter isn't a double crossing type and he doesn't try to go back on his word. There is some honor to him even with his questionable habits. He doesn't seem to like when other people are failing those standards either. He looks horrified when he sees Erik's demonstrations on TV, and is taken back when Erik talks about assassination.

Even with his flippant attitude, Peter does have things he loves. He loves his sisters and mother dearly. He takes the time to slow down and play on his younger sister's level despite how much he hates the slowness of the normal world. He also does go out of is way to protect the X-Men crew from the bullets. He can be a jerk, but he does have a good heart underneath that. Sometimes that good side can take some digging to find, but it's there and can be brought out by the right circumstances. People who are kind to him are more likely to get that kindness in return and because he grew up as an older brother, he's going to be a lot easier on children than adults.

In nearly all canons featuring Peter's character he's very protective of his sister and family. While we see little of his relationship with either sister in the movie, it's not a stretch to say that protectiveness is still their. We do see him going out of his way to be close with his youngest sister and we do know he's the only 'man' of the house. With those circumstances and the fact he himself probably brings a lot of trouble down on the family with his constant law breaking, Peter is very likely a protective person who would do most anything for his siblings and mother. In some ways, being the older brother in a house without a father has made him feel like the father figure to his sisters. This protectiveness would like be extended in shades to other young children around his sisters' ages and of course would be in effect when he encounters versions of his family from alternate universes. If he were to ever encounter his daughter from the comic canon, he would completely become an overbearing father figure to overcompensate for the lack of one in his own life.

Abilities/Skills:

Superspeed
:  Peter's defining power is his super human speed. He's shown to move faster than a bullets can be fired, able to lap a large room several times, change bullet trajectory, and re-position several people before the bullets can hit a target. Canonically he moves so quickly that people mistake him for having teleportation abilities.  This abilitiy also comes with acceleration/deceleration powers as he is shown to be able to start running at an inhuman speed without needing to build up any acceleration and stop on a dime without needing to decelerate first.

Friction Immunity While in Speed Mode- This is less a canonically stated ability and more of one that comes from logic. Since he moves at such high speeds he would need some sort of way to block or negate the effects of friction in order for the power to be used as he does. Otherwise he would be setting fire to the ground as he ran, causing himself serious harm from chaffing or loosing his footwear every time he speed up.

Fast Learner
-  He's learned enough about the technology available to a teenager in his era to modify both his cassette players and his arcade games to work at high enough speeds that he can enjoy them. Because his mind is also effected by his super speed he can learn, read, and think at accelerated levels. Clearly it's not because he's actually any smarter than your average teenager, but because his mind works just as fast as his body he has more subjective time than a normal person to think. It makes him appear more capable and gives him a jump on other people when it comes to learning something new.

SAMPLES
Network Sample:

[The video starts with Peter standing in the hallway of the medbay, lips curled in a disgusted frown.]

Child labor laws exist, you know? Pretty sure it's illegal to force a teenager to work on your alien space craft.

[He zips off, the video a blur of motion until he settles in the rec area. He kneels near the pool edge, testing the water with one hand. He flicks water into the air.]

And kidnapping. Kidnapping is generally a no-no on Earth. America. Where I'm supposed to be.

[More blurred motion. Peter stops by the mess hall, then a second later he's in the gallery riffling through everything he can get open. His frown is deepening by the second.]

What, no snack cakes?
[Louder, forcefully:] You know what's really illegal? Kidnapping a teenager just before he finally gets to drive. I mean, I don't need a car. [The blur again, then he's on the observation deck.]  It's just the principle of the thing.

[He leans against the glass, head turned to look out into the view. He sighs, some tension seeping from his shoulders.]

Look, I'm not above playing it a little loose with the rules but this is a bust.

Prose/Action Sample: The man is reaching for his keys, yawning loud while he gropes around in his pockets. Peter watches from across the street at the cafe, trying not to vibrate through the metal chair. The man is going so slow, Peter almost thinks he's being mocked. Then he turns,  watches the waitress pour coffee for the patron beside him, liquid flowing like syrup and thinks different.  Sometimes he kind of hates seeing the world in slow motion.

The man finally pulls out his keys, starts for the lock on the door. Peter sits up, too quick. The table jars, sending the cup and silverware flying. The waitress is looking his way, he can see her eyes start to widened. He puts it all back before the waitress can blink, smiles bright and smug when looks confused. He's arranged the table differently and he knows that bothers people, unsettles them. Sometimes they say something, provide him with a little entertainment. Most of the time they don't. The waitress is one of those disappointing types.

The man has finally opened the door to his shop and Peter takes that as his cue. Peter's up in a gust of air, darting into the narrowly opened door past the man. It takes him nanoseconds to find the cassettes, put a few in his jacket pocket. He's got time to spare so he darts into the toy aisle, finds one of those little fairy wands like the one his sister broke the week before. He tucks that away too, and runs back out the door.

He's back in his seat before the man has the store door all the way open, watches while he and half the people on the street gasp about the sudden gust of wind. The waitress is staring at him, still confused and rumpled by the wind. Peter smiles again.

"Refill?" Peter asks, laying on the charm and not letting it bother him when she rolls her eyes. He pulls one of the tapes out, pops it into his player. He sits back, listening to Alice Cooper start a beat while waiting for the pharmacy down the street to open.
